Garden Ponds

My main Koi pond was about 10,000 gallons with gravity fed filters and a large waterfall to return the clean water to the pond. Needless to say this was not my first attempt at building a Koi pond. At our last previous house I had a small pond of about 3,000 gallons with an under gravel filter. My latest pond was initially built in a rectangular shapes, but a few years ago I rebuilt it retaining the original pipe work and fundamentals of the filter system. Mainly because of the artistic influence of my wife, it became far more aesthetically pleasing. I had one other small pond with a waterfall and a wildlife pond of approximately 23 ft diameter. This has encouraged frogs, toads and newts to breed readily. My last project was to add a stream with a bridge to gain access between areas of the garden. My children (who actually learned to swim in the pond – the Koi don’t seem to mind!) were delighted when a pair of wild mallards chose our ponds to breed on. They had three ducklings which survived and grew up to fly off for the winter. The next year however although they again attempted to breed, a fox took all 10 young ducklings just as they had hatched. (I now have no love of foxes!). The array of other wild life using the garden also increased.
